If the goal of the year is to make it NCAA's both in and outdoors,  when should you start competing and how many events, i.e. full multi, two or three per meet a week.  There are several meets in NYC close enough to where I'm located in Nov and Dec, but would that we to early to start up the season.

Personally, I would open up with a hep in December and post a score right away, especially if you are ready to do so. Preferably at a smaller meet (good facility) where you can roll through the events with little down time in between.  I would then do one in late January to stay sharp, at a much bigger meet to get used to the waiting and competing in a better atmosphere. If you have the score you need, then you can just train on the events which you feel need it most and chill till nationals.

Most likely, you will have to do another at conference but you should have ample time to recover before nationals. I would shy away from doing more multi's than you have to, especially if you have the score you need. If you don't open up with one, then I would recommned the late Jan, Conference and then Nationals.

Thanks, that kinda what my coach is thinking. Penn Indoors late Jan, conference and Nationals.  What about IC4A's though, its two weeks before nationals in that enough time,  I've always done it before trying to quilify for nationals.

Yeah, two weeks is enough time to recover but I don't recommend it. Most of the guys that sneak in last minute never show anything at nationals. If you have the score already, train and compete in the events you deem the most important. I always liked competing in my best events just before, so I go in with some confidence.

As far as weekend meets, get in as many events as you can without having to run all over the place.  I would recommend hurdling, a jumping event, a throw (every other) and an endurance run 800 or 1000 depending on the meet.

I would for sure try to get an early one in.  Last year was my first year in the multi events and only had the opportunity to do one Hep, and ended up with the flu that weekend.  This year im going to try and get one in at Bucknell the first week of December and try to get atleast a provisional mark like yourself.  Unlike all other events in track we only get 2 or three chances so take advantage of it if you can get another one in there.  Then if you do qualify your coach, who im sure knows what he is doing, can prepare earlier to peak you for nats.

I would trust your coach. I've heard he's never been wrong.

As CW said, people who scramble for marks at the last minute often screw there chances at the big meet if they do happen to get in. Sometimes it even carries over to the outdoor season. This is especially true for the multis and the gruelling longer events like a 10k or marathon. In a scenario that confronts pretty much only NE coaches, you really need to pick your battles. You can't expect to do a multi at conference, IC4A champs, and nationals and still compete at a high level.
