its just protein, you can take it as many times as u want. best times to take it: breakfast, pre/post workout
-
I'd consider adding some high Glycemic Index carbs to it post workout. Perhaps 40 grams or so of maltodexterine and/or dextrose would be ideal. I don't know why I'd really take it in the morning, though, when eating your protein is an option. Eating sounds a lot more pleasant to me than guzzling 1/2 to 1 liter of mediocre flavored beverage. In a pinch, however, it's far better than going with no protein or worse yet, no food.

I agree, but he should check the jug first, right? I think a lot of them come with all that stuff.
most whey protein drinks only have 2-5grms of carbs, thats why you should look at other ways of getting carbs into the system.

I thought they labeled the low carb powders.
I used to mix my whey with gatorade, mostly for the taste, but also for the reasons stated.

most pure whey protein only have 2-5grms of carb the ones that have 50+ are usually label mrp's. for example my whey protein has 360cal, 30grm pro,40carbs, 1grm fat/ 10grm mct, 4grms epa/dha, and nitrogrn 4gm.
Actually now that I look, mine only has 3g. Always assumed it was more. -
Most proteins themselves are low carbohydrate. The closer to pure isolate you get, the closer to zero carbs you get as well. I actually use whey that has zero grams, so it is absolutely necessary (as it is with one with 5g or 15g) to spike it with some high GI carbs to assist in the restocking of glycogen, the slowing of catabolism, and flipping the "anabolic switch" to "on".
-
you will pay alot more for a whey isolate only protein with no carbs. but if u get a isolate/concentrate mix u get only about 5g of carbs for a lot less, and if you are trying tp gain muscle mass the extra carbs wont hurt

…and a less quickly absorbing protein. Absorbtion rate is an essential factor when buying any protein, especially one you are considering for PWO purposes.
Is it? Or is that all marketing? I have taken every protein from generic whey concentrate to microfiltered, ultrafiltered, hydrolyzed, blah blah and never noticed any difference except in my wallet.

There is a difference Mortac8,
Most athletes need to look at the program first before complaining of a product as pwo is felt over a year. One or two months maybe not. I don't know what % of your maximal output is placed in but those with lactose issues and GI stress need the better product. Syntrax nectar and dextrose works for some of my athletes but most need a product like cytofuse.
Many will claim they feel no difference between healthy diets and fast food….not arguing to be a jerk. Absorption is key if you are getting most of your proteins from powders as it is cheaper to use protein powder than tuna and chicken. If you are using a PWO and two servings of casein that is 75 grams of protein and you can't have one third not doing the trick. Absorption rate is not as important as % absorption as 3 minutes faster will not do much. The gut is tricky…
all whey protein has the same absorbtion rate. the only difference btwn isolate and concentrate is that isolate has about 0 fats and 0 carbs and no lactose. if you are not lactose intolerant then go with a blend of both, its a lot cheaper.

I have a quick question, I workout around lunch time, or right before it, thats when my classes get done. So I was wondering if it was a good idea to take a serving of 24g optimal nutrition whey protein when I wake up, which is at like 7:30-8:00, and then take another serving of it when I am done with my workout, which is between 12:30-1:30 depending on the day.
I was just wondering, because it seems like I would be taking them awfully close together, and I wasnt sure if i was going to get the full potential out of it
My workouts mainly consist of strength training right now, and a good cardio workout (im usually pretty sweaty afterwards) but nothing like the crazy sprint workouts that i plan to do with my kids come march.
Just hoping someone could answer my question.
Also is is a good idea to drink it right before i eat lunch, or even with my lunch, or should I find a different time to do this?

I'm not possitive, and others would know better, but I think before bed would make more sense than when you wake up, especially if you are eating breakfast. I can't speak for everyone else, but I would assume most have a shake right after working out and some would add one right before bed.
does anyone else agree, with this, cause then i will start taking one post workout and one before bed.
-
it is good to take it when u wake up bc your body has been fasting (hence the name breakfast) and will quickly absorb anything u eat. also try to take it post work out because your body will absorb it better as well. if u want, or have the money, u can take it pre work out to make sure your muscle have available amino acids.
whey protein is quickly absorbed so it is not the best to take before bed, as it will not last the night. casien is a slow digesting protein that is better to take before bed.
-
alright, thanks guys. i will start taking it in the morning then.
also do you guys have any suggestions on what kind of creatine to take and when to take it. From what i have been reading im going to get some prolab or higher power, cause its cheap and people like it, and just mix it with my post workout protein. Even if you could point me to a topic where there would be some information, that would be awesome.
thanks
