    Which Event Do I Have The Most Potential In?

          Ok, for the past few days I’ve been debating which event I had the most potential to do well in, so today I decided to do a few tests to see which events I might have the most potential in. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a fifteen year old freshman who has been training for track for about the past year. For a freshman, I’d say I’m decently below average growing wise compared to others, so don’t scoff too much at my marks. When I did these tests, I was bundled up and for several of the tests I was running in snowy weather and off a day with literally no sleep. Considering this, I’d say that my performances were about 10% off of what they might be on a good day. If anyone has any imput on which events I’d likely be best at, please tell me.

          Chest Medball Throw(8 Lb): 20 Ft,

          SLJ: 7’8 Feet

          STJ: 22 Feet

          5 Stride Long Jump: 8’7 Feet
          For this test I ran in 5 steps, jumped, and didn’t make any attempt to extend or do anything for distance. A better expalmation would be in the article on this site called The Test Decathlon or something.

          Vertical Leap: 19 Inches

          10m Start: 1.9 HT (1.81)

          Fly 20m: 2.3 HT (2.23)- Was a bit snowy.

          15 Second Drill: 115 Meters

          This was sort of a test that I ran for 15 zeconds and was marked. It was slightly hilly and slick, so my performance likely suffered alot.

          A couple of things, why test in bad conditioning having had no sleep? The standing long jump shows potential but I have to query the validity of the hand time tests. I have no idea about comparison but last year I ran 11.78 (-1.5) off a 2.01 10m FAT with reaction time and I don’t think you are around that level yet.

          It would be good also if you actually included what you actually do in the 100, LJ and TJ.

          *edit – VJ is also quite good

          On a good day (last year) I ran the 100 in the upper twelve’s and I tripled jumped 31′. I’d think both of them would be a bit better at this point since I’ve had more training and I’ve grown about two inches.

          Also, the reason I tested in those conditions was that I didn’t want to test the day before school track starts, which I feel like I’m probably going to do.

          The 10m start was handtimed, so it would be more like a 2.2x if it was a FAT time with reaction. I’m also a pretty good starter in general. Also, the 15 second run was more a long sprints type of test than anything just to add.

          Personally I think it is hard to say at this point. As you mentioned you are only in 9th grade. Experiment with different things, do what you enjoy doing and you will slowly start to figure out where your strengths are. That’s what I did, no need to specialize or focus in on 1 event.

          Agreed. Your 400 sounds reasonably good relative to your 100m given your age.

          My recommendation is to keep getting taller 🙂

          I’ve always thought of myself as either more of a 400m person or a 60m person becaause my starts have always been miles ahead of my top speed, but I have good nataul 400 type endurance. I’m also pretty good at triple jump for not really knowing the event.

          As the others have said, it’s difficult to say at this point.

          Just enter yourself in lots of events at competitions, you will naturally find out which ones you’re good at after a few competitions.

          I always thought I was a short sprinter (60m/100m) as my start used to be the strongest part of my race when I was younger. But as I’ve grown into my body I’ve actually found that my natural talent lies in the 200m.

          Don’t rush to become ‘pro’ at something straight away as your body will change as you grow/train and reveal your natural strengths.
