is there a penultimate stride in triple jump, i know in long jump it is really stressed, but looking at jonathan edwards technique, i just dont see it.

Excellent question. I agree with pretty much everything you said and have flip-flopped on this subject for a while. I agree that it seems the cost benefit of running 60m for MaxV development might be low compared to a 80m run but we might need to take a deeper look. To counter what you said, I think if we are TRULY talking about max velocity we are really only talking about maybe 10 meters of running, after which deceleration begins. As such, working beyond that 10m window isn’t truly working at max velocity. Following that rationale, you could say that 60m would be about the right distance for developing max velocity (about 50m needed for acceleration + 10m at MaxV) and anything beyond that might be considered speed endurance. Taking your example and applying what I’ve just said, if you did 7 x 60m you’d have run a total of 70m at MaxV compared to the 50m at MaxV if you had run 5 x 80m.
To clarify, here’s my cajun attempt at an analogy…..when you eat crawfish, you’ve got this small lobster looking thing sitting in front of you, then you peel it and take off the shell only to find a piece of tail meat smaller than your pinky. You could go ahead and eat the head and the guts but it wouldn’t really be what you want. When it’s all said and done, you’ve got to do a lot of work just to get a little bit of meat, but that little bit tastes so good 😀 Thoughts?

Yes there is a penultimate in the TJ it’s just less dramatic because the emphasis is more on maintaining horizontal velocity and not on generating vertical velocity. On the same token, the penultimate step for a HJer will be very noticable because they need to lower more than a horizontal jumper because they are primarily trying to jump vertical.

There seems to be a lot of sets in the 90+% range in the competition phase. I would probably recommend that once you start competing you should not be doing any sets in the 100% range and only a few (if any) in the 95% range.

1. what about the bench press reps/sets though?
should i split with the dynamic/max days or what?2. should i be doing full squats even though i am doing full front squats as well?
thanks
good points…
I think though that sometimes sprinters spend too much of their time in training % wise accelerating, to the point they have poor rhythm with Vmax mechanics, of course this is where the high intensity SE work fits in.big ups DIII. thanks a bunch
I opened the site up and win zipped the file.
It is a scanned copy of NSA from ’96 on Edwards strenth training. First page was in what I think was Italian, didn’t look any further, because it runs VERY slow.Mike Young on March 11, 2003 at 8:29 pm · in reply to: Inseason Track and Field Program for me #19142I think you could either stick with the max / dynamic effort rep scheme or make a gradual transition from something like the 4 x 8 to something like the dynamic effort days. Ultimately, I think you’ve got tons of options for this one and most of them will be acceptable as long as you’re not going crazy and doing 20 rep sets or something.
As for the back squats, I’d just alternate periods of full squats and jump squats or speed squats.

I finally was able to download the training article. Nothing too special there…..I’ve seen that article published in English in NSA I believe.

should i do the bench in every session? or every other?
im thinking of doing them on the front squat days and using the same rep/set schemes as the front squats because they look decent.
when should i eliminate the bench during competition period
okay….it was interesting for me though…:P
to get the url of the picture:
u cant just name the website that the picture is from… like http://www.track.com
you need to right click the picture you want…and click properties…you will see a url in there….copy and paste that into your avatar url box.
boom – avatar
But I must defer to my man JJ who was the original poster. I merely copied it to my hard drive and did the mark and paste thing.
